The biggest problems with VoIP in Australia have been the fact that the ACMA (Australian Communications and Media Authority) has regulations in place that every business has to have the ability to call triple zero (000) in case of an emergency. This has ben the caveat that has stopped many business owners from moving to a completely VoIP telephony solution.

It cost a lot of money! and many months of negotiation to get it underway but we finally have the ability to port numbers from other PSTN providers and be able to call emergency services from any of our lines.
